Protecting the Wildlife We Love with the Right Wavelengths of Light

Ideally, lighting should always enhance the beauty and well-being of the natural world. At Kenall, we support Legrand’s larger mission to protect our planet by offering luminaires that complement our surroundings without disrupting them.

Wildlife Friendly Lighting

Ninety percent of the continental United States sea turtle hatches occur in Florida. To protect this delicate process, numerous Florida municipalities have instituted lighting ordinances and community education.

According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, in order to promote nesting and protect hatchlings as they makes their way to the sea, lighting for coastal areas should follow three simple guidelines:

Keep it low:

Low Guideline for Turtle Safe LIghting

Position lighting as low as possible for its intended purpose, and keep the wattage as low as possible.

Keep it long:

Long Guideline for Turtle Safe Lighting

Wavelengths of light should be 560 nm or longer – amber to red.

Keep it shielded:

Shielded Guideline for Turtle Safe Lighting

Light should be shielded from the beach

Kenall offers a range of turtle-friendly, amber lighting in both native and phosphor-coated amber to support these challenging environments, allowing lighting designers to choose the source that best fits the project.

Protecting the habitat of endangered sea turtles helps protect them from extinction—a goal we proudly support. At Kenall, we’re committed to lighting the way for a better tomorrow, today.
